Over the years, I’ve been incredibly fortunate, honored and humbled to have been recognized for work in the fields of education, volunteering, music and writing. I’ve also been lucky enough to work with many students, educators and community members by leading numerous workshops and talks.
Below are some of the honors, awards and achievements that remind me to continue to do the work that I do.
EDUCATION & VOLUNTEERING
In 2001, I was recognized as a Georgia Adopt-A-Stream Volunteer of the Year for my work in training citizen scientists for the Adopt-A-Stream statewide stream monitoring program.
In 2004, I was also awarded the Branch Award by the Malaysian Nature Society for my efforts in fundraising to secure a Ford Foundation Grant to establish and train the Malaysian Nature Guides.
In 2010, The BENCHMARX, a rock band based in Kuala Lumpur, that I was a singer, guitar player and song writer for was named the MOST ELECTRIFYING – EXHILARATING – EXCITING LIVE Act in Malaysia.
From 2007-2013, The BENCHMARX raised over US$20,000 for conservation of endangered species in Southeast Asia by Rockin’ 4 the Environment and using music to inspire students, artists, musicians and local community to take action for education and sustainability.
In 2008, my book, As if the Earth Matters- Recommitting to Environmental Education, co-authored with Thom Henley received the National Science Teacher Associations Recommendation.
In 2012, I initiated GREEN Riders and then in 2014 GREEN Paddlers to raise awareness for conservation and sustainability in Southeast Asia. To date, our documentary videos have received 20,000+ views and during the GREEN Riders bamboo bike ride we reached 400,000+ community members via social media.
I’ve also been a speaker at several Global Issues Network (GIN) conferences including GINdo (Jakarta International School in Indonesia), GINSing (United World College SE Asia in Singapore) and GINSanity (Mont Kiara International School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
My talks and workshops cover topics such as making a difference through service projects, initiating inspirational educational and conservation awareness campaigns and education for a sustainable future.
In 2013, I worked as a consultant with Reef Check Malaysia to train their staff in methods of environmental education for their Reef Camps on Tioman Island, Malaysia!
In 2015, I was invited to give a talk at a Theory of Knowledge (TOK) student conference at United World College Southeast Asia to encourage students to get outside and learn about the natural world to see the value of Education Outside the Classroom.
In 2016, I spoke at the Round Square International Conference at United World College in Singapore to encourage students to take action in their local communities.
In 2016, I co-taught an EARCOS sponsored workshop with Deidre Fischer at Bali Island School entitled Growing Global Citizens. The workshop was designed to help teachers incorporate Global Citizenship into their mission, vision and daily lessons.
In 2016, I was invited to Sekolah Cikal in Jakarta to provide training for 100+ educators in how to incorporate Global Citizenship into the curriculum.
I was also invited to give the Keynote Address at the Association of Experiential Learning Indonesia (A.E.L.I) Conference hosted in Bali in 2016. My talk focused on Conservation, Adventure, Risk & Safety and Education and was entitled Do You C.A.R.E.?
In 2016, I was the keynote speaker at the International School of Kuala Lumpur Ecology Symposium. My message was to combine your knowledge of science and ecology with a sense of adventure and a desire to make a difference in your local community.
I was The Bug Man at the Bali Spirit Festival in 2017! I took kids and parents on mini-hikes in the surrounding rice fields to discover Nature and hunt for insects!
I was the Keynote Speaker at the 2017 ServICE (Inspire! Connect! Empower!) Conference at Bangkok Patana School with my talk focusing on meeting the UN Sustainable Development Goals through student lead community action projects.
I was also a keynote speaker at the Hong Kong Academy Global Issues Network conference in 2017. My workshops and talks focused on helping students plan and implement their own personal action projects for sustainability.
My latest keynote was at the Global Issues Conference in Brunei in2017 where I spoke about using adventure education to discover your passion, have fun and make a difference in global conservation issues!
