I’m often asked to share my experiences with students and teachers. Below is a summary of the many adventures I’ve had in the last few years.
In June of 2012, I left my classroom teaching job to pursue my dream of working outdoors and teaching science and ecology in the field.
Since then I’ve been leading expeditions, participating in community service projects, speaking at conferences and sharing my love of Nature and the outdoors with anyone intrepid enough to join me for an adventure!
To kick start my new direction, I rode a bamboo bicycle from Thailand to Bali to shed light on environmental issues in Southeast Asia.
Along the way, I learned a tremendous amount about local communities and individuals taking action for conservation and discovered even more about my own personal dreams and goals.
In 2014, I circumnavigated Phuket Island, Thailand in a kayak to raise awareness for marine conservation issues in the region.
Since 2012, I have also managed to author and publish several books, which I use to raise funds for my personal stewardship initiatives and community service projects.
As if the Earth Matters, a teachers guide to environmental education and environmental stewardship, co-authored with Thom Henley, is now in its second printing and has recently been released in eBook format. We’ve been very fortunate to have As if the Earth Matters recommended by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) in North America as an excellent resource for educators.
The Box People, an illustrated children’s book with the message to get outside and explore Nature, has been shared with schools all over Southeast Asia including United World College Southeast Asia, Phuket International Academy, International School of Kuala Lumpur, Wells International School, The Green School Bali, Bali International School and Dyatmika School.
Young Homeless Professional, a short novel about a time I was homeless in the USA urges people to discover their Connection with People and Planet and become Global Citizens, has also been been highly recommended for teens and adults because of the message it contains to connect with the world around you.
Waffle House Prophets, Poetry about Sacred People and Places, encourages us to see the world around us as magical, spiritual and sacred. By doing so we’ll gain a deeper appreciation for our companions on this spinning globe and a greater understanding of who we are and our place on the planet.
Since leaving the comforts of an air conditioned classroom, I have also been very lucky to lead many trips ranging from a 5-day kayak and camping trip with 5th grade students at Phuket International Academy to multi-day expeditions exploring Reefs to Rainforests and Mountains to Mangroves with middle and high school students of all ages.
Schools I work with for Education Outside the Classroom include, United World College Southeast Asia, Saudi Aramco School, Jakarta International School, International School of Bangkok, United World College Thailand, Saint Josephs Institution Singapore and Bali Island School.
My latest adventure, Bali Coast 2 Coast is a hike across Bali that will take you to places that few tourists ever see!
These are a few of my experiences & adventures. Now its time to start planning yours!
Whatever you do, make sure you take time to get outside and play!
